What is a Bess project?

Dutch battery developer Dispatch and partners have unveiled a plan to build a 45-MW/90-MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at home, which it describes as the largest stand-alone facility of this type in the Netherlands.

What is the €100 million Bess scheme?

The €100 million (US$106 million) allocation is part of a €416 million package for PV co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) technology that was initially to total €41.6 million a year, starting in 2025, for ten years. The 2025 programme is set to open on 1 January 2025, and more details will be released to the House later this year.

Who is implementing the Bess technology?

The technology will be provided by Fluence Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FLNC), while Equans Netherlands will be in charge of the engineering and construction work. Dutch utility group Eneco, in turn, will be optimising the BESS across various power markets.

How does a Bess system work?

BESS systems store energy generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, releasing it during periods of high demand or when production dips. Thereby they ensure a steady and reliable energy supply.

How will a Bess energy system work?

The system will be used for grid stabilization by storing excess energy from renewable sources. The battery, consisting of 144 Fluence cubes will be located on a 6000m² site. The 45MW/ 90Mh utility-scale BESS will on average store enough energy supply equivalent for 21.500 households per day. Construction is set to commence in the coming months.

Residential BESS OEMs can also offer value-added services such as energy trading, analytics on battery energy usage and charging, and energy optimization. These services can offer homeowners increased freedom of PV and BESS utilization as well as energy tariff avoidance during peak demand periods.
